How to select a Pump ?

Common mistakes in Pump selection

Normally it is observed that for a particular application pumps are selected by thumb rule or past reference.
Excessive Consideration is given to economy of purchase.
Many times these two things leads to wrong selection of pumps , high maintenance & high running costs.
It is also observed that the suction and delivery pipe line sizes are also mismatch with pump selected and with water flow requirements.
This causes very high electrical consumption , higher maintenance and higher operating costs

Considerations In Pump Selection

Please check following before finalising pump selection

1. Water consumption in Liters per day
2. Pumping Duration estimate
3. Upper and Lower water tank capacities
4. Total head required based on vertical height from sump to delivery
5. Pipe line lengths ,no of elbow & bends  shall help to estimate frictional losses
6. Now with above information total head required can be calculated as

Total Head = Vertical Head + Frictional losses (M)

Based on water flow required in LPM and Head required , one can select proper capacity pump.

Don't ask PUMP for certain HP while purchasing Instead ask for pump meeting to your requirement of head and flow
Actually HP of pump is consequence of selection process.

Protection of Pumps while operation

Mostly it is observed pumps are controlled by starters without any electrical protection .If pumps are operated through proper control panels which provides electrical protection,it helps to provide
1.Electrical protection to pump
2.Voltmeter and Ammeter readings of voltage and current drawn by pump tells us about health of pump.

If proper selection of pump and Control Panel is done before purchase and installation , smooth trouble free & economical operation of pump can be achieved.
